Recovery

Recovery key

  • A recovery key (QR code) is displayed during enrollment. Save it in a secure location (print or store in an encrypted vault).
  • You can view the recovery key at any time from the app menu.

Cloud backup of your recovery key

Starting in Dapple Authenticator 1.2.0, you can store your recovery key securely in cloud storage:

  • iOS — iCloud Keychain
  • Android — Google Block Store

The recovery key is stored end-to-end encrypted, meaning the cloud provider (Apple or Google) cannot access its contents.

Enabling cloud backup during enrollment: When your recovery key is first shown, you will be prompted to save it to cloud storage. You can accept or decline at that point.

Toggling cloud backup after enrollment: Open the app menu → View Recovery Key and use the cloud backup toggle to turn backup on or off at any time.

Recovering your profile on a new device

You will need:

  • Your recovery key — either retrieved from cloud backup (if previously enabled), or your saved recovery QR code.
  • The biometric used when the profile was created.

Steps:

  1. Install Dapple on the new device and open the app.
  2. Choose Recover when prompted.
  3. Retrieve your recovery key using one of the following methods:
    • Cloud backup (iOS/Android): If a recovery key is available in your Apple or Google account, Dapple will offer to use it. Confirm when prompted.
    • QR code: Scan your saved recovery QR code with the camera.
  4. Complete the biometric scan when requested.
  5. Dapple will regenerate passkeys on the new device.

Transfer to Windows

  • Use the mobile Transfer Recovery Key action to scan the QR shown by the Windows installer and complete Bluetooth-based transfer.
  • Follow pairing prompts and retry the transfer if Bluetooth is unreliable.

Note: Cloud backup is not used for Windows enrollment. The Bluetooth-based transfer flow is always used when enrolling a new Windows device.
